In 2014, engineer Nick Vukelja's grandmother underwent chemotherapy treatments for cancer. In her immunocompromised state and spending up to four hours at a time in a busy outpatient clinic getting infusions, she contracted a serious respiratory infection spread through the air.
It wasn’t the hospital’s fault. Viruses and bacteria are everywhere – even in healing spaces conscientious about cleanliness. In fact, Nick was pretty certain the HVAC system at his grandmother’s hospital used highly effective UV-C light for disinfection.
But between that sanitized air leaving the vents and his grandmother’s nose and mouth, there was plenty of opportunity for pneumonia-carrying droplets to enter her personal breathing space. The nurses shared Nick’s concerns and expressed worry about too many preventable infections impacting vulnerable patients.
While Gram recovered from her ordeal, Nick set his engineering skills to creating AIRiWEAR, the first wearable UV-C air sanitizer that delivers disinfected air straight to your personal breathing zone.
